Highly Enriched Uranium-Free Medical Radioisotope Production Methods: An Integrative Review

The ever-growing need for radiopharmaceuticals, i.e., compounds containing pharmaceutical drugs and radioisotopes used medical diagnostic imaging (SPECT/PET scan) treating neoplasms, is significantly leading to an increased demand such substances in hospitals clinics worldwide. Currently, most large-scale productions of required radiopharmaceuticals are carried out research reactors, via the fission highly enriched uranium. However, because large amounts radioactive waste produced as byproducts this process, new greener methods needed radioisotope production. This work presents integrative literature review summarizes uranium-free production, accomplished through adoption reaction routes, distinct acceleration technologies, or by using other physical processes. considered forty-eight studies published from 2010 2021 on three established virtual databases. Among these selected works, a cyclotron adopted HEU-free method 44Sc, 68Ga, 99mTc often reported investigated production methods.
